What is language Immersion?
Language immersion is a unique model in which two languages - English and a target language - are both used for instruction. Language immersion programs work toward goals such as bilingualism and biculturalism for their students.

Why language immersion?
There are many benefits to language immersion. Those benefits include understanding and respecting other languages and cultures, increasing one’s cognitive and speaking abilities, and being able to compete in a global economy.

What are the goals of our Mandarin Immersion Program?
Our goals include:
Bilingualism: development of high levels of proficiency in Mandarin and English
Biliteracy: academic achievement at or above grade level in academic areas in both languages
Multiculturalism: demonstrate positive cross-cultural attitudes and behaviors and high levels of self-esteem

Additionally, our district offers a Seal of Biliteracy upon high school graduation.

How does the Mandarin Immersion Program look like at College Park?
We follow the 50/50 model in which 50% of instruction will be in Mandarin and the remaining 50% will be in English. We are self-contained, meaning one teacher will teach in both languages. The four components of Mandarin Language Arts include reading, writing, speaking, and listening, with an emphasis on speaking and listening.

I do not speak Mandarin at home so how can I support my child?
You do not need to speak Mandarin at home in order to support your child. Teachers will provide supplemental materials, which will usually be online, when it is appropriate. Moreover, if there is Mandarin homework, it is usually a review of what was taught in class. However, we do ask parents to keep in mind that half of our instructional time will be spent in Mandarin. Therefore, parents may be asked to provide some English support at home.

When can I enroll my child into the Mandarin Immersion Program?
You can enroll your child as early as kindergarten. We do not offer a Mandarin T-K class.

Can my child enter the program after kindergarten?
Yes, however, they will have to meet certain criteria if entering the program after kindergarten. Please call our school office at (714) 424 -7960 for more information.

How can I enroll my child in the Mandarin Immersion Program?
Parents will be asked to fill out an online application. The application is available in both English and Spanish. To apply, please visit: District Website Program Information.
